New House - Week 1

Our first week in the new house & we are quickly learning the joys of home ownership.
On Sunday I did the first load of laundry only to have Lake Wentworth appear on the basement floor.
#289 - 10,000+ lakes...
Showers were causing the same problem. A visit from the plumber showed the mainline to the street was being blocked by tree roots from the big maple out front. Apparently this is a common problem with houses as old as ours. Luckily it was an easy fix & with regular maintenance it should be ok.

The front porch light & foyer light were not working & we had been told that the last owner never got them to work either. Matt took them down only to discover they had never been wired! Yesterday the electrician came & wired both making for a much friendlier entrance.
Let there be light
We believe this light in the foyer is original to the house which we love.

We need to paint every room in the house. The last owners were from India & the colors were very South Asian (according to the neighbor the house was decorated completely in that style.) Though the colors are pretty they aren't really our style (ok, I don't think the lemon yellow in the bathroom is even pretty) First up is the living room. We bought the Franklin Rug from Pottery Barn & are picking the wall colors to match it.
Chosing colors
I love that you can get samples to try on the wall.
Chosing living room colors
We love the wall color, Benjamin Moore Nantucket Grey, but think the fireplace needs to go one shade darker.

The guest room is bright orange & I plan on changing it to a taupe. A little surprise there though when I did the test I discovered bubbles in the wall.
Guest Room
Yikes, it was painted over wallpaper...now there is a project!

What a great light! They always work better when wired. :) LOL The colors you are picking look great. I can't wait until we get to buy a house. Hopefully the next year or two.

  6. Sometimes home ownership is certainly a challenge! But then you get to paint the walls any color you like and you remember why you put yourself through the pain. Enjoy the decorating!
